Basic Information

Tropic Trails’s mammal tour of South India explores the Nilgiri biosphere reserve, which enhances moist deciduous forests, montane rainforests and dry deciduous forests in the Western Ghat mountain range, one of the eight ‘hottest hotspots’ of biological diversity declared by UNESCO. This compound sphere runs parallel to the west coast of the Arabian sea and influences the climate of the region immensely. This region also has a striking level of biological diversity and endemism. Starting from the acclaimed Nagarhole National Park this tour will take you through Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Wayanaad, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Pampadumchola National Park, Periyar Tiger Reserve and Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary Thattekkad

Tour Itinerary

You will be picked up from Airport and transferred to Kabini. The Kabini Forest Reserve distributes some of the most diverse flora and fauna seen in the country the seasonal patches of grassland emerging in the Kabini Reservoir Backwaters attract a high level of wildlife to witness. Asiatic Elephants, the Royal Bengal Tiger, melanistic Leopard and large herd of the Indian Gaur are a few we will be sighting.

Our next destination is Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, the third forest reserve we visit within the Nilgiri Biosphere. The name Mudumalai in the local language translates to ‘the ancient mountain range’. Expected species are Sloth Bears, Dhole, Indian giant Flying Squirrel, Indian-crested Porcupine, Indian Chevrotain, Gaur, Indian Giant Squirrel, Southern Plains Langur and Black-buck-antelope inhabiting the grassy plains.

We will head towards Valparai, which falls under the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. The region is home to endemic species such as Lion-tailed Macaque and Nilgiri Tahr among species such as   Stripe-necked Mongoose, and Jungle-striped Squirrel, Nilgiri Langur, Red Muntjac, Indian Giant Flying squirrel and Elephants.

On the way to Marayur we will visit Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary which is home to the Grizzled Giant Squirrel and the Tufted-grey Langur. This dry deciduous forest hosts many rare species of reptiles and birds, few to name are Indian Star Tortoise and the largest population of Mugger Crocodiles in Kerala and birds like Painted Spurfoul, Spot- bellied Eagle-owl, Sirkeer Malkoha, Brown-headed Barbet, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Crested Treeswift, Brown Fish Owl and Bay-backed Shrikes etc.

One the way to Munnar we will drive through Asia’s biggest Sandal Wood Forest and will visit Eravikulam National Park which is renowned for the Nilgiri Tahr, this park hosts many other endemic faunas as well. Munnar is yet another paradise for animal lovers. The endemic and one of the rarest species of Western Ghat, the Nilgiri Marten is found here among endemics such as Nilgiri Tahr, Nilgiri Langur and Malabar Giant Squirrel etc.

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary Thattekkad is heaven for bird lovers. Which hosts over 250 species of birds includes, Ceylon Frogmouth, Ceylon Bay Owl and Malabar Trogon. The key species of the destination is Grey-slender Loris.

Periyar Tiger Reserve is one of the most visited protected areas in India. This wild paradise is known for its unique and diverse flora and fauna. Periyar Tiger Reserve bares its boundary with the Cardamom hill range, the finest aroma of the spices arose from the merchants’ yards fills this small hilly town, the town also shared an equal share of space with wild wanderers coming in, such as Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Indian Wild Boar (wild pig) and the Malabar Giant Squirrel.
