The tour starts in Thattekkad, often regarded as Kerala’s premier lowland birding destination. You’ll explore dense tropical forests and productive birding trails. Over two days, expect a mix of vibrant endemic species and elusive nocturnal birds with guided sessions in both daylight and after dark.

The journey then ascends into the cool, scenic hills of Munnar, where the habitat transitions into shola forests and grasslands, home to a completely different set of high-altitude endemics. Carefully selected birding stops en route and within the region provide opportunities to encounter some of the Western Ghats’ most sought-after species. A visit to Eravikulam National Park adds both birding highlights and the chance to see the iconic Nilgiri Tahr.

Day 1:

Upon arrival, your guide for the Kerala birding trip will meet you and transfer you to Thattekkad (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes). Spend the day relaxing or begin birdwatching in the evening. During your first birding session, you’ll observe a mix of common species and regional specialties, with possibilities including Malabar Parakeet, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Black Baza, and Flame-throated Bulbul etc. As the sun sets, you’ll head out for a night birding session in search of owls and nightjars. Possible nocturnal species include Indian Scops Owl, Mottled Wood Owl, Jerdon’s Nightjar, Great-eared Nightjar, and Jungle Owlet.
Day 2:
Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Thattekkad

You will start early from Camp for Urulanthanni (a 25-minute drive), one of the top birding hotspots you’ll visit multiple times during your stay in Thattekkad due to its high bird density and ease of sightings. Expected species here include Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Sri Lanka Bay Owl, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher, Malabar Barbet, Malabar Woodshrike, Grey-headed Bulbul, Malabar Flameback, Crimson-backed Sunbird, Flame-throated Bulbul and Nilgiri Flowerpecker, among others. After concluding the session at Urulanthanni, you will return to camp for lunch. Later in the evening, you will head out again for birding, concluding with a night session. Species likely to be seen in the evening include Grey Junglefowl, Red Spurfowl, White-bellied Treepie, Indian Pitta, Drongo Cuckoo and various woodpeckers. Nocturnal species expected include Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, Jungle Nightjar, Oriental Scops Owl, Brown Boobook and Sri Lanka Frogmouth.
Day 3:
Shola-Grassland Habitats of Munnar

After an early breakfast, the journey continues towards Munnar, one of the most scenic hill stations of the Western Ghats. Along the way, you will make birding stops at carefully chosen spots, each offering new opportunities to spot species unique to the higher altitudes. As the road winds upwards into misty hills and shola-grassland habitats, keep your binoculars ready for special montane birds such as the Nilgiri Flycatcher, Square-tailed Bulbul and Palani Laughingthrush, all of which are range-restricted species found only in these mountains. Upon reaching Munnar, you will check in to the Hotel, where you can enjoy lunch and a short rest before heading out for an afternoon birding session. This outing takes you through nearby forest patches and along a picturesque village road, where the blend of wooded trails and open views makes birdwatching especially rewarding. Likely encounters here include the Black-and-orange Flycatcher, Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher, Indian Yellow Tit, Square-tailed Bulbul, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, and forest jewels such as the Blue-capped Rock-thrush and Indian Blue Robin. The melodious calls of Indian White-eye and Indian Blackbird add to the experience, while raptors like the Black Eagle and Bonelli’s Eagle may be seen gliding high above. Within Eravikulam’s high-altitude montane shola-grassland ecosystem, you’ll have excellent chances of encountering key endemics such as White-bellied Sholakili, Palani Laughingthrush and Nilgiri Pipit. There’s also a good chance of spotting the elusive Nilgiri Thrush, a rare and highly sought-after species considered one of the top highlights of the Indian subcontinent. After the morning birding, you’ll return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll revisit the same area explored the previous day to target any hill species that may have been missed, offering another opportunity to complete your checklist of montane specialties.
